    Overly laboured repetition repetition sorry did I say repetition just to be clear about repetition of only a half truth regarding hyperfocal distance. Completely forgot to mention aperture is fundamental too rather than just a mere thing to play around with.

    Hi Dave: Your web site says to leave questions here, even if it doesn't exactly pertain to the topic of the video. I have been backpacking with my camera for about 50 years now. Although I turn 70 this year, I see no reason to stop now. I just need to plan a bit more thoroughly and maybe shorten the hikes just a bit. None of the of the other youtubers who I occasionally drop in on are backpackers, so I really enjoy your videos. I have never hiked the Cascades but I enjoy them vicariously through you. As a wilderness backpacker/photographer, I was interested in your thoughts wrt filters - CPs and NDs. I try to take pretty good care of my gear, but despite my best efforts my current filters (not the cheapest/not the most expensive) have lots of microscopic scratches on them - which is disappointing. I've seen the "scarring" on your tripod ball head in some of your videos, so I know you meet the terrain head on. Which brands have you felt held up the best to these demanding conditions? Thanks Doug in Montana

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow 2 месяца назад

      Hey Doug, Good to hear from you. Thanks! Here ya go: www.davemorrowphotography.com/p/whats-in-dave-morrows-camera-bag.html I don't use ND filters. Just CPL. Instead of shortening your hikes, my recommendation would be to drop your pack weight as much as possible, and walk the distance each week consistently that you want to hike during a week of backpacking. Most peoples packs are really heavy. Here's my gear list if you're interested: www.davemorrowphotography.com/backpacking-checklist My pack weight minus food and water is 12-16 lbs, depending on the temps and conditions. Camera setup including tripod is another 7 lbs. So sub 20 with camera gear for all but winter hikes. The difference that makes is immense. I'm not doing anything stupid like not having enough warmth/insulation or first aid gear either. Just takes time to get your setup really dialed in and get rid of all the useless stuff. One of the most useful things you can do is make a gear spreadsheet that lists each item with it's weight in oz and adds up all these items so you can see what your base weight is on each trip. I made my own in google sheets but you could also use this: lighterpack.com/welcome

    What is your recommendation to keep dry when hiking in rain/heavy rain? Men's Copperfield Wind Shirt , I see that you are using this jacket, does it keep you dry when you are hiking in heavy rain/rain?

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow 2 месяца назад

      you'll never stay dry on the trail in heavy rain no matter what gear. Makes more sense to use light gear that will keep you warm when wet. It's just water. Keep your body temp up and your camp clothes dry that's all that matters.

    Hey, quick question. You mention a keto diet, but some of your previous backpacking food videos show dehydrated lentils and quinoa. Do you stay on keto in the field? If so, how?

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow 2 месяца назад

      I switched about a year and a half ago. The difference it made is insane for endurance, energy and recovery. I do. Salmon, freeze dried beef. Jerky. Grass fed beef sticks. Butter. Avocado Oil. Low carb high fat nuts. Bone broth powder. Could add almond butter and a bar in there too. If I'm hiking everyday, easily in ketosis at 30-40 grams net carbs. Differs person to person. Can get a keto mojo meter on amazon and check your blood to dial it in at home. After a month you'll know what to eat to stay in keto. This books really good if you want to learn about energy and metabolism. amzn.to/3VZq2aq

      @@ErikHogan no problem. Fat has the highest cal/gram ratio so my food ended up being lighter. Once you got the meals dialed in so you come back with zero extra food it’s really nice.

    Excellent video. My setup is very similar, base weight 7 lbs not including camera gear. ULA Ohm II pack. Ghost Whisperer Hoody is my default puffy down to 25F. Colder than that I switch to an Arctyrix Cerium hoody, colder than that I have a Marmot hooded puffy that I've use in the winter. Merino base layers, fleece mid layers. I have a Zpacks tent, earlier version of what you have, for when I'm sleeping on the ground. Primary I'm a hammock guy and I use a Warbonnet Blackbird and Warbonnet 20F quilts. Hammock Gear dyneema tarp. For bad weather I bring a hammock sock which raises my temp 15 degrees. I've had that setup in some pretty sketchy weather and it all works great. I use a trash compactor bag too. Anything I need to keep dry goes in that. I have never had any water issues with that despite swimming rivers with the pack floating in front of me and deluge thunderstorms, all day rain. My stove is an alcohol cat food can. That works great down to about 25F but colder than that I go with a UL butane setup (because the alcohol is difficult to light in cold temps). Freezing and deep winter I run a Whisperlite and inverted butane or white gas. I use trail runners too. Trash bag idea is great for drying wet shoes. Darn Tough socks all the way.
